Infections of the Liver and Biliary System

Infections of the liver and biliary system are not uncommon as most of the infections are viral in nature. Globally, viral hepatitis is a major public health problem, parallels infections such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), malaria, and tuberculosis, and is  associated with significant morbidity and mortality. More recent data, alarmingly, project the global mortality from hepatitis B and C to exceed that from tuberculosis, HIV, and malaria by 2040. Rapid advances have been made with hepatitis C virus therapy at a time when the focus has shifted towar d global elimination, although the progress toward this goal has been slow.
