Pencil beam scanning proton therapy for the treatment of craniopharyngioma complicated with radiation-induced cerebral vasculopathies: a dosimetric and linear energy transfer (LET) evaluation
Radiation-induced cerebral vasculopathy (RICV) has been described in paediatric patients after radiation therapy (RT) for tumours of optic tracts, hypothalamus, and suprasellar region [1,2]. Delayed RICV mainly results from an accelerated arteriosclerosis process of small and medium sized vessels within the radiation field [3,4]. This complication can present as moyamoya syndrome, which results from stenosis or occlusion of large and intermediate cerebral arteries . The real incidence of RT-induced stenosis of carotid arteries and intracerebral arteries is however not well established.
CONCLUSIONS: Immunohistochemistry seems to be a promising option not only in clinical recognition, but also in the selection and monitoring of treatment effects. However, these methods have not yet recommended for routine clinical use. PMID: 33032462 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
CONCLUSION: This study found that childhood cancer survivors in New Zealand had a high prevalence of developmental dental abnormalities and it identified potential risk factors related to their cancer treatment. Inequitable access to oral rehabilitation for this patient group argues for a mechanism for consistent improved access to publicly funded dental care across district health boards in New Zealand. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that there is minimal error due to image acquisition and measurement when using a biplanar slot scanner. Biplanar slot scanning technology tended to underestimate the size of the marker; however, the least accurate measurements only erred by 1.5% from the true length. This indicates that unlike traditional radiographs the sources of error in biplanar slot scanning images are not due to parallax and are likely due to patient-specific factors and rather than the technology itself.
