Response Regarding: Gender Disparity Among Surgical Peer-Reviewed Literature

We read with great interest the article by Bernardi et  al.1 entitled “Gender disparity among surgical peer-reviewed literature.” Although there has been an increasing proportion of female medical students, significant gender disparities exist with regard to female-held physician leadership positions overall.2,3 The number of publications by female physicians and medical students has been increasing across several medical and surgical specialties, and yet this progress has not been proportionally reflected in the number of females occupying high ranking academic positions.
