ADAO Lights a Candle for Workers' Memorial Day

On April 28, the Asbestos Disease and Awareness Organization (ADAO) will recognize Workers' Memorial Day through their Light a Candle program. The program encourages people to light a candle or do so through their website to honor loved ones who are fighting or have lost their fight against asbestos-related diseases. As of April 26 2011, over 11 million candles have been lit in a total of 243 countries. Each year, approximately 125 million workers are regularly exposed to asbestos. Asbestos has been directly linked to the development of malignant mesothelioma, an uncommon and aggressive cancer that attacks the lining of the vital organs in the body. More than 300 people die every day from asbestos-related diseases, yet a complete ban on asbestos has not been implemented in many countries, including the United States. While asbestos has been linked to deadly diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer, there have also been studies that suggest a link to an increased risk for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia and multiple myeloma. Annually, more than 107,000 people pass away because of asbestos-related diseases. Even though asbestos has been listed as a known human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the National Institute of Health (NIH), it is still used products.
