It's a bit of a confusing term since for most laypeople medicine means doctoring as a whole but general (internal) medicine actually has a more specific meaning: care of adult patients with diseases which have traditionally been treated using medical approaches (as opposed to surgical).
Even more confusingly, it's not the same thing as general practice, although general practitioners see a lot of general medicine in their work :p
