The impact of universal live attenuated hepatitis A vaccines in Henan, China, 2005 –2018

Hepatitis A is a vaccine-preventable disease caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV) and spreads through the fecal-oral route (Jacobsen, 2018). It is usually caused by drinking unclean water or by eating uncooked food. The severe symptoms of hepatitis A consist of fever, loss of appetite, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, and jaundice. Infected children under the age of 6 years generally do not show significant symptoms. In older children and adults, infection typically leads to more severe symptoms, with jaundice occurring in more than 70% of cases.
