Mediterranean diet, tobacco consumption and body composition during perimenopause. The FLAMENCO project
The perimenopause period (understood as the time just before, during and after menopause) usually occurs between 45-60 years old [1]. Perimenopause has been associated with greater overweight or obesity, loss of lean mass, increases in fat mass (FM), central body fat distribution and a higher waist circumference (WC) [2,3]. The adverse effects of android or truncal adiposity and the relatively diminished favourable effects of gynecoid or peripheral fat [4,5] might entail greater cardiometabolic risk during this period [6].
