Behold electronic alerts!

In this volume of The Journal, Gubb et al report on an approach to the identification of acute kidney injury (AKI) in children using electronic health record information that has been implemented in Wales. The authors report that over a 4 year period, 1719 children had 2472 alerts and 84% of the children had stage 1 AKI as defined by an increase in creatinine by 0.3mg/dl or to 1.5-1.9 times the reference range. Very interestingly, 58% of the AKI cases had elevations of creatinine that were within the reported normal laboratory range.
