Distinction of low-grade endometrioid carcinoma in endometrial samplings from high-grade mimics: a practical pattern-based approach

Low grade endometrioid carcinoma may exhibit a diverse spectrum of morphological variations that mimic high grade cancers. In an endometrial sampling, the distinction between low grade endometrioid carcinoma versus higher grades or other tumor types of carcinoma directly affects clinical decisions regarding the type and extent of surgery and lymph node dissection. This review takes a practical pattern-based approach to this differential diagnosis, highlighting glandular, papillary, solid, spindle-cell, clear-cell rich, mucin-rich, and necrotic patterns of low grade endometrioid carcinoma.
