Making an important pediatric diagnostic test easier to swallow

(Medical University of South Carolina) To diagnose swallowing problems, speech-language pathologists rely on a 'gold-standard' test that has the drawback of exposing children to ionizing radiation. Because the risks of exposure are unknown, clinicians approach the test with a great deal of variability, sometimes reducing radiation but at the cost of diagnostic power. A Medical University of South Carolina researcher has received a grant to gather evidence to guide clinicians to achieve diagnostic accuracy without compromising safety.
