Is bariatric surgery resolving NAFLD via microbiota-mediated bile acid ratio reversal? A comprehensive review
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome, as it is closely related to obesity, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance [1]. Accordingly, the prevalence of NAFLD and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), the later evolutive stage of NAFLD, are increasing at the same pace as obesity becomes a global epidemic. In fact, today, NAFLD is considered to be the number 1 cause of chronic liver disease worldwide [2 –4]. As no specific drugs have yet been approved for NAFLD, at present, the only effective treatment is weight loss through diet and exercise.
