Authors: Dehghani MR, Shariati A, Haghjou A, Izadi S, Sattartabar B, Rezaei Y Abstract BACKGROUND: Several factors and risk stratification tools have been studied to determine the prognosis of acute coronary syndrome. Fragmented QRS (fQRS) is a marker of myocardial scar and its prognostic role has recently been demonstrated. The present study aimed to investigate the association between the presence of fQRS in electrocardiogram and the prognosis of ST-segment elevation and non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI and NSTEMI). METHODS: A total of 661 patients with myocardial infarction (MI...

alván-Ramírez M Abstract Cirrhotic cardiomyopathy is characterized by the presence of structural and functional cardiac alterations in patients suffering from hepatic cirrhosis, without previously known cardiac causes that may explain it. Clinically, it is characterized by the presence of variable grades of diastolic and systolic dysfunction, alterations in the electric conductance (elongation of corrected QT interval) and inadequate chronotropic response. This pathology has been related to substandard response in the management of patients with portal hypertension and poor outcome after transplant. ...

Purpose of review This review summarises the most recent evidence regarding the effects of diet in preventing and reducing age-related cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases. Recent findings Recent evidence indicates that nutraceuticals and whole diet approaches may protect against the development of age-related cognitive decline and pathological neurodegeneration. The neuroprotective effects are diverse depending on the nutrient employed and may involve a reduction of neuroinflammation, an activation of the endogenous antioxidant defence system and a modulation of the gut microbiota structure and function. ...

Conclusions: The prevalence of childhood hypertension is significant in the Southwest of China and alarming in rural areas, which requires community intervention. Children living in rural areas combined with obesity, low social economic status, dietary imbalance, and abnormal lipid metabolism were associated with an increased risk of hypertension, and routine care programs should be conducted to prevent childhood hypertension. This study analyzed the impact of sex on in-hospital and 1-year outcomes of elderly (≥75 years of age) patients with ACS hospitalized in our department between January 2013 and December 2017. Results: A total of 711 patients were included: 273 (38.4%) women and 438 (61.6%) men. Their age ranged from 75 to 94 years, similar between women and men. Women had more comorbidities (hypertension (79.5% vs. 72.8%, p=0.050), diabetes mellitus (35.2% vs. 26.5%, p=0.014), and hyperuricemia (39.9% vs. 32.4%, p=0.042)) and had a higher prevalence of non-ST-segment elevation ACS (NSTE-ACS) (79.5% vs. 71.2%, p=0.014) than men. The...

Conclusions: AD and CVD are frequently associated. Further studies are needed in order to understand the effect of CVD and its risk factors on AD in order to better comprehend the effects of subclinical and clinical CVD on the brain. Finally, we need to clarify the impact of the underlying hypothesized mechanisms of this association and to investigate gender issues. PMID: 32454996 [PubMed]

Aims: To evaluate Gas6, sAxl, and sMer as biomarkers for cardiopulmonary complications of SS and SSD. Methods: In a cross-section...

Conclusion. Most hematological and biochemical profiles were significantly lower in the Schistosoma mansoni-positive group as compared with the control group. Most hematological and biochemical profiles decline significantly as the parasite density increased. Hence, with Schistosoma treatment, supportive treatment against hematological and biochemical disorders is recommended. PMID: 32454838 [PubMed]
