Sensors, Vol. 20, Pages 2073: A Comparative Study of Brachial–Ankle Pulse Wave Velocity and Heart–Finger Pulse Wave Velocity in Korean Adults Sensors doi: 10.3390/s20072073 Authors: Jaegeol Cho Hyun Jae Baek Arterial stiffness is considered an index of vascular aging. The brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) method is widely used because of its proven effectiveness; and the pulse wave velocity measurement method using both electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG) is actively being studied due to the convenience of measurement and the possibility of miniaturization. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of age and gender in Korean adults using both the baPWV method and the PWV method with ECG and finger PPG (heart–finger PWV). The measurements have been carried out for 185 healthy subjects of Korean adults, and the results showed that the baPWV was highly correlated with age in both genders (r = 0.94 for both males and females). However, the correlation values in heart–finger PWV measurement were significantly lower than those of baPWV (r = 0.37 for males and r = 0.71 for females). Although the heart–finger PWV method is suitable for mobile applications because it can be easily miniaturized while maintaining its signal quality, these results show that the heart–finger PWV method is not as effective as baPWV at evaluating the arterial stiffness.

Written by Pendell Meyers(with really great and thorough explanation of this finding by Ken Grauer). At my hospital, patients with any symptoms which could be vaguely interpreted as a possible stroke during the triage process are brought to the high acuity area and a provider is asked to do a " neuro check " , which involves a quick H and P and exam to determine if we should activate our stroke protocol.A man in his 70s was brought to me for a neuro check, and the triage providers commented that they were worried about a possible seizure as well. The patient was alert and oriented with normal vitals at triage. He ...

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that relationships existed between ECG findings and cardiac morphology in the chimpanzees of the present study; however, further research is required to examine whether the predictive models generated can be modified to improve their clinical utility. In this study, an ECG analysis toolbox together with a user-friendly graphical user interface, which contains the all ECG analysis steps between the recording unit and the statistical investigation, is developed. Furthermore, a new feature calculation methodology is proposed for ECG analysis, which carries distinct information than amplitudes and durations of ECG main waves and can be used in artificial intelligence studies. Developed toolbox is tested using both Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Beth Israel Hospital (MIT-BIH) Arrhythmia ECG Database and an experimentally collected dataset for performance evaluation. Authors: Carbone A, Avitabile V, Golino P, Nigro G, Russo V Abstract A 65-year-old woman, during an elective head up tilt test, after the sublingual nitrate administration, experienced electrocardiogram alteration with ST elevation in the inferior leads, that returned normal when the patient was laid supine after few minutes. Serial cardiac markers were not elevated and coronary angiography revealed normal epicardial coronary arteries. Paradoxical vasospastic response to nitrates in vasospastic angina patients represents a rare but very challenging condition and the best therapeutic approach in this subgroup of pat...

Conclusion: The state-space approach—which does not rely on external classification labels—is able to continuously track an arousal level from skin conductance features. Significance: The method is a promising arousal estimation scheme utilizing only skin conductance. The approach could find applications in wearable monitoring and the study of neuropsychiatric conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

In this study, an improved blind ECG-watermarking technique is proposed to embed the information of the patient’s data into the ECG signals using curvelet transform. The Euclidean distance between every two curvelet coefficients was computed to cluster the curvelet coefficients and after this, data were embedded into the selected clusters. This was an improvement not only in terms of extracting a hidden message from the watermarked ECG signals, but also robust against image-processing attacks. Performance metrics of SSIM, NC, PSNR and BER were used to measure the superiority of presented work. KL divergence and P...

AbstractThe coronary artery calcium data and reporting system (CAC-DRS) is a novel reporting system based on CAC severity. Lung cancer patients have a high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), for which CAC severity may provide additional prognostic information. Using non-gated, non-contrast computed tomography (CT), we evaluated the CAC-DRS for predicting CVD and all-cause death in patients with potentially curable resected lung cancer. We retrospectively studied 309 consecutive patients without a history of CVD (mean age 67.4  ± 8.2 years, 61% male) who underwent curative surgery for non-small-...
