CONCLUSION AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: The interpretation of the results is limited by the pilot nature of this study. The combination of psychosocial treatment with medication management mimics real-world treatment. In order to isolate the individual contributions of medication vs psychotherapy a much larger study would need to be conducted. (Am J Addict 2020;00:00-00). This article addresses the need for a protocol by including occurrences of accidents and injuries, consequences to anesthesia practice and patient care, costs, and the culture in an anesthesia group or department. Components of the protocol are formation of a committee, risk assessment, clear workplace policy, annual continuing education, annual supervisor training, drug screening of anesthesia personnel, pharmacy accountability, and access to treatment. The article describes the protocol and provides supplemental information to aid in implementation at other anesthesia departments. Substance abuse among CRNAs is a complex...

AbstractPsychological interventions for addictive behaviours (i.e., alcohol, smoking, gambling) typically focus on reducing the frequency of that target behaviour. Individuals generally set a “count goal” and then monitor the frequency of these behaviours via a process of counting/recording (i.e., number of alcoholic drinks, number of dollars gambled). We argue that this approach, although a key feature of interventions, presents a range of challenges, including: confusion regarding what constitutes a count; remembering to keep count; and remembering to stop at a certain count. We argue that these inherent feat...

Compulsion-like motivation for intoxicants, where intake persists in the face of known negative consequences, is a major contributor to human addiction (1,2), and there is considerable interest in understanding the molecular and brain circuit mechanisms that drive this pathological behavior. While there are different conceptualizations of compulsion [as discussed by L üscher et al. (1) and Hopf (2)], one widely used animal model is the willingness to respond for an intoxicant even when paired with an acute negative event such as footshock.
