Measles is an exclusively human disease caused by a type of paramyxovirus that infects the respiratory system and leads to symptoms including runny nose, cough, conjunctivitis, high fever, and a characteristic rash spreading from the face (World Health Organization, 2018). Measles can be transmitted through air and direct contact. It is highly contagious, and an estimated nine out of 10 non-immune people exposed to an infected person will become infected. There is no specific antiviral treatment at the moment (Centres for Disease Control and Protection (US), 2017).

In conclusion, we demonstrated a simple generation-dependent model that was able to adequately capture an observed transmission pattern of the measles outbreak in Japan, 2018. The proposed model also helped predict the future incidence and evaluate public health control measures. Discussion We applied simple phenomenological models applied to surveillance data of Zika cases from Antioquia, Colombia, to forecast the size of the Zika epidemic and evaluate the reproduction number within the first two disease generations.
