The detection of early esophageal squamous cell neoplasia can be very challenging because early lesions are usually subtle, and their endoscopic appearance is often only discrete reddening of the mucosa. However, most endoscopists would miss those subtle changes on routine white-light endoscopy. Therefore, advanced imaging techniques like iodine staining and virtual chromoendoscopy with narrow-band imaging (NBI), blue-light imaging (BLI), and i-scan are usually applied to improve detection, especially during endoscopy of high-risk patients with head-and-neck cancer and during surveillance after esophageal squamous cell cancer.
