Primary Renal Carcinoid Tumor: Report of Two Cases.
This report describes 2 cases of primary renal carcinoid tumor with unique presentations and management in our regional health care system. Because primary renal carcinoid tumors are quite uncommon, there are no clear established guidelines on preoperative imaging or posttreatment surveillance in patients with these tumors. There remains a large amount of variability in the diagnosis, workup, immunohistochemical analysis, treatment, and surveillance of patients with primary renal carcinoid tumors. As we learn more about this disease, we hope to optimize patient outcomes and standardize pretreatment workup and posttreatment surveillance. PMID: 32240087 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
Authors: Perez BA, Slover J, Edusei E, Horan A, Anoushiravani A, Kamath AF, Nelson CL Abstract BACKGROUND: Total joint arthroplasty is one of the most common surgeries performed in the United States with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) being one of the most successful surgeries for restoring function and diminishing pain. Even with the demonstrated success of TKA and a higher prevalence of arthritis and arthritis related disability among minorities, racial and gender disparity remains a constant issue in providing care for the adult reconstruction patient. AIM: To assess the role of demographics and expectations ...

Emerging immune therapy, such as with the anti–programmed cell death–1 (anti–PD-1) monoclonal antibody nivolumab, has shown efficacy in tumor suppression. Patients with terminal cancer suffer from cancer pain as a result of bone metastasis and bone destruction, but how PD-1 blockade affects bone cancer pain remains unknown. Here, we report that mice lacking Pdcd1 (Pd1−/−) demonstrated remarkable protection against bone destruction induced by femoral inoculation of Lewis lung cancer cells. Compared with WT mice, Pd1−/− mice exhibited increased baseline pain sensitivity, but the deve...

In conclusion, despite an early improvement in renal function after everolimus introduction, we found no evidence that everolimus halts the long-term mGFR decline compared to continued low-dose CNI therapy. Due to retrospective design, small sample size and heterogenous characteristics, definite conclusions require prospective studies. PMID: 32479116 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
Conclusion: The biopsy rate in NAFLD patients is low and fibrosis ≥ F2 along with NAS ≥4 only present in a few cases. Transient elastography and FIB-4 are useful to select patients at risk for fibrosis for liver biopsy. PMID: 32476514 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
Authors: Yan H, Jin S, Liang L, Du J, Aithal GP, Li L Abstract Background and aim: Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is characterized by the presence of acute decompensation (AD) of cirrhosis, organ failures, and high short-term mortality rates. In present study, we explored whether Pro-adrenomedullin (Pro-ADM), a biomarker of sepsis, is a potential marker of outcome in patients admitted for AD or ACLF and whether it might be of additional value to conventional prognostic scoring systems in these patients. Methods: 332 consecutive patients with AD of cirrhosis were prospectively enrolled. Pro-ADM was measured fo...

CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that the origins of the early-onset CS require serious investigation. Research into the potential to reduce future chronic pain conditions through early effective treatment of primary dysmenorrhea is also needed. PMID: 32475703 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
