Anesthetic Considerations for Fontan-Associated Liver Disease and the Failing Fontan Circuit

DR FRANCOIS Fontan (1929-2018) was a pioneer in the field of congenital heart surgery. The surgical procedure that bears his name has undergone significant technical modifications since its inception and now provides improved outcomes and hope throughout the world for children born with a functional univentricular heart.1-8 It recently has been estimated that as many as 70,000 patients may be alive worldwide with the Fontan circulation, and the expectation is that this population will double in the next 20 years.
