Authors: Tigabu A, Ferede W, Belay G, Gelaw B Abstract Background: Urinary tract infections are the common types of infections in the community and health care settings. Despite the widespread availability of antibiotics, urinary tract infection remains a worldwide therapeutic problem. It is a continuous and significant problem in cancer patients. Methods: A hospital-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted on 240 study participants from January to June 2019. Sociodemographic data were collected by a predesigned questionnaire and midstream urine samples collected using simple random sampling techni...

Authors: Rosana Y, Ocviyanti D, Halim M, Harlinda FY, Amran R, Akbar W, Billy M, Akhmad SRP Abstract Pregnant women are usually at risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) such as asymptomatic bacteriuria. In the current multidrug-resistance era, appropriate diagnosis and treatment should be provided to avoid complications in pregnant women in developing countries, which have limited facilities, such as Indonesia. The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro susceptibility tests. Urinary isolates were collected from 715 pregnant women who visited eight Community Health Centers in Jakarta, Indonesia, between 2015 a...

Abstract There are limited treatment options for enterococcal urinary tract infections, especially vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE). Oral fosfomycin is a potential option, although limited data are available guiding dosing and susceptibility. We undertook pharmacodynamic profiling of fosfomycin against E. faecalis and E. faecium isolates using a dynamic in vitro bladder infection model. Eighty-four isolates underwent fosfomycin agar dilution susceptibility testing (E. faecalis MIC50/90 32/64 μg/mL; E. faecium MIC50/90 64/128 μg/mL). Sixteen isolates (including E. faecalis ATCC 29212 and E. faecium ATC...

CONCLUSION: Isolation of high level aminoglycoside resistant (HLAR) Enterococci is a challenge for the treating physician because aminoglycoside cannot be used in combination with glycopeptide or ampicillin for such isolates. The occurrence of HLAR, Van A and Van B VRE genotypes is a cause of concern as they may transfer drug resistance genes to other bacterial isolates, thus leading to limited therapeutic options. Conclusion: The observed widespread multidrug resistance clearly warrant implementing stricter control measures, local guidelines of antimicrobials usage, and continuous epidemiological surveys at hospitals and communities. PMID: 32148678 [PubMed]

Conclusions: Bacterial infection prevalence is relatively high in patients with liver cirrhosis. Although all analyzed scores, including the LMR, NLR, aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine aminotransferase (ALT), CRP, CTP, and MELD, allowed the prediction of bacterial occurrence, the LMR had the highest clinical utility, according to the area under the curve (AUC) and odds ratio (OR).

MATERIALS AND METHODS: De-identified culture results derived from antibiograms were collected from six academic and community hospitals in the Philadelphia region. Analysi...

ConclusionsThe combination of fosfomycin and doxycycline should be evaluated further with additional LRVREF isolates. In vivo studies should also be performed prior to usage in clinical situations.

Authors: Okan Cakir M, Kirca O, Gunduz S, Ozdogan M Abstract Infections in immunocompromised-neoplastic patients represent a severe complication. Among bacteria, Enterococcus species constitute a common causative pathogen of urinary tract infections (UTIs), especially among hospitalized patients with or without urinary tract carcinoma, related commonly to urinary tract abnormalities, urinary catheters or prolonged antibiotic treatment. Although enterococci have been considered more commonly as colonization bacteria in the intestine than virulent agents, they are frequently implicated in UTIs. The high incidence of ...
