The representation of women and underrepresented minorities in emergency medicine: A look into resident diversity

Although emergency medicine physicians serve a diverse population, the representation of women and underrepresented minorities in the workforce lags behind. The sex, racial, and ethnic composition of emergency medicine trainees does not reflect the diverse populations they serve. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, underrepresented in medicine (URM) means “those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population.” [1] Women make up over 50% of the U.S.
