Cigarette-smoke (CS) exposure plays a major role in the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer [1]. Several independent studies have shown that smokers with COPD have a 2 –4-fold higher risk of developing lung cancer compared with smokers without COPD [2,3]. Evaluation of the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) data for patients with spirometry information [4], a meta-analysis of eighteen published prospective cohort studies involving 12,442 lung cancer cases [5], and another meta-analysis involving 31 case-control and 8 cohort studies found that the relative risk for lung cancer...

We report a case morphine toxicity in an elderly patient of lung cancer with concomitant presence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and recent onset renal impairment. Opioid analgesic overdose is a lethal but at the same time, a preventable and treatable condition. We managed the case using naloxone infusion. However, we emphasize early anticipation and recognition of predisposing factors followed by timely intervention to manage this life-threatening condition. PMID: 32421843 [PubMed - in process]

A. German Chemoprevention of lung cancer is thought to significantly reduce the risk of acquiring these conditions in the subpopulation of patients with underlying health issues, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder and smoking-associated lung problems. Many strategies have been tested in the previous decades, with very few translating to successful clinical trials in specific subpopulations of patients. In this review, we analyze these strategies, as well as new approaches that have emerged throughout the last few years, including synthetic lethality concept and microbiome-induced regulation of lung carcinog...

CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that ELISA-based analysis of anti-bacterial EV antibodies titers can be used as a diagnostic tool for lung disease. The present findings provide insights into the pathogenesis of lung disease as well as a foundation for developing a novel diagnostic methodology that synergizes microbial EV metagenomics and immune assays. Conclusions: Immune cell subtypes and cytokines are differentially expressed in lung tumors, and the presence of COPD elicited a decline in IgG-secreting plasma cell levels but not in other cell types.

Since late 2019, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has infected millions of people worldwide and resulted in more than 200,000 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) deaths. Emerging data suggest that elderly people as well as individuals with underlying health conditions are at a higher risk of hospitalization and death.1-3 Interestingly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ’s list of risk factors for severe COVID-19 (Fig 1) largely overlap with the list of diseases that are known to be worsened by chronic exposure to air pollution, including diabetes, heart diseases, and chronic a...

ConclusionsA short ‐term (3–6 months) loss of pulmonary function after operation is acceptable for lung cancer patients with COPD. However, there may be a high risk of postoperative complications in NSCLC patients with COPD. Therefore, surgical treatment needs to be carefully considered for these patients.

Abstract Chronic airway inflammatory diseases are characterized by persistent proinflammatory responses in the respiratory tract. Although, several treatment strategies are currently available, lifelong therapy is necessary for most of these diseases. In recent years, phytophenols, namely, flavonoids, derived from fruits and vegetables have been gaining tremendous interest and have been extensively studied due to their low toxicological profile. Naringenin is a bioflavonoid abundantly found in citrus fruits. This substance has shown notable therapeutic potential in various diseases due to its promising diverse bio...
