Significant Regional Variability Yet Similar Survival in Heart Transplantation Utilizing Increased Risk Donor Hearts

Heart transplantation remains the gold standard for the treatment of patients with advanced heart failure. Heart transplant volumes in the United States (US) have increased over the past five years. The use of Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Increased Risk (IR) donors has also increased. We sought to investigate geographic patterns of CDC IR donor heart utilization per United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) region and subsequent survival outcomes.
