This study summarizes the findings of the youngest participants in two previous randomized controlled trials.MethodThis is a hypothesis-generating study reporting the main results from the youngest participants in two larger randomized controlled trials investigating the effect of high-intensity interval training (HIT). The article summarizes the main results from 28 young participants (

Immunological memory specific to previously encountered antigens is a cardinal feature of adaptive lymphoid cells. However, it is unknown whether innate myeloid cells retain memory of prior antigenic stimulation and respond to it more vigorously on subsequent encounters. In this work, we show that murine monocytes and macrophages acquire memory specific to major histocompatibility complex I (MHC-I) antigens, and we identify A-type paired immunoglobulin-like receptors (PIR-As) as the MHC-I receptors necessary for the memory response. We demonstrate that deleting PIR-A in the recipient or blocking PIR-A binding to donor MHC-...

AbstractPurposeThe correlation between right hepatic vein (RHV) diameter and inferior RHV (IRHV) incidence and that between IRHV incidence and other clinical features remain unclear. We investigated factors correlated with IRHV incidence as well as provide a simple and reliable method for predicting IRHV presence preoperatively.MethodsWe obtained computed tomography (CT) imaging data of 1980 patients from the Department of Radiology, Qingdao Municipal Hospital, from July 1, 2016, to July 1, 2017. We excluded patients with heart disease, inferior vena cava (IVC) disease, history of liver surgery or trauma, space-occupying l...

AbstractPurpose of the ReviewAlthough still a relatively new technology, long-term left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) for management of advanced heart failure is rapidly increasing. Initially designed as a bridge to transplant, these invasive devices are increasingly used as a destination therapy, creating unique and long-term infection risks. The aim of this comprehensive review is to highlight current evidence about the prevention, diagnosis, and management of LVAD-specific infections.Recent FindingsThere are two recent, major societal guidelines (The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, 2017, a...

Abstract Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) results in a restrictive cardiomyopathy caused by extracellular deposition of transthyretin, normally involved in the transportation of the hormone thyroxine and retinol-binding protein, in the myocardium. Enthusiasm about ATTR-CM has grown as a result of 3 simultaneous areas of advancement: Imaging techniques allow accurate noninvasive diagnosis of ATTR-CM without the need for confirmatory endomyocardial biopsies; observational studies indicate that the diagnosis of ATTR-CM may be underrecognized in a significant proportion of patients with heart failure; an...
