The objective of this study was to provide an overview of whether adherence to brain trauma foundation (BTF) guidelines improved outcomes following TBI utilizing intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring. Methods: This cohort study between 2000 and 2013 involved 1848 patients who sustained severe blunt TBI. Outcomes were correlated with whether or not ICP monitoring was utilized based on BTF guidelines. Results: The BTF guideline adherence rate for utilizing ICP monitoring in patients with TBI was 30% in 1848 patients. Adherence rates positively correlated with younger age, high injury severity scores, lower Glasgow C...

Conclusions: Excellent accuracy was found for types 1A, 1B, and 3C deformities (ends of spectrum). There was more variation among surgeons in differentiating between one-column (types 2A and 2B) and two-column (types 3A and 3B) deficiencies, as surgeons often failed to recognize the radiological signs of posterior column failure. This failure to identify column deficiencies can potentially alter kyphosis management. There was excellent consensus among surgeons in the recommendation of type 2 osteotomy; however, some variation was observed in their choice for other osteotomies. Authors: Bund L, Tricard T, Alexis W, Schneider L, Karger C, Gicquel P Abstract Closed reduction and percutaneous osteosynthesis is an alternative to the open procedure for articular fractures of distal tibia of children. 38 patients were retrospectively reviewed. The measured parameters were : the score of Gleizes and the discrepancies between preoperative radiographic and CT scan measurements and postoperative radiographs. A significant correlation was found between the gap and the step-off in preoperative radiographic and CT scan. A significant decrease of the gap and step-off displacement was noticed after surg...

Authors: Behaeghe O, Van Beeck A, Dossche L, Somville J Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the inter- and intraobserver reliability of a CT-based femoral anteversion measurement. 17 CT scans showing an abnormal anteversion on one side were presented to 6. Three measurements of all scans were obtained : two bilateral measurements and a third measurement with a flipped CT scan. Interobserver correlation results using the spearman test for left, right and anteversion difference had a mean of respectively : 0.918, 0.760 and 0.757. Intraobserver correlation had a maximum of respectively : 0,99, 0,89 and 0,94...

One of the more insidious features of the new coronavirus behind COVID-19 is its ability to settle into unsuspecting hosts who never show signs of being sick but are able to spread the virus to others. In a study published June 3 in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers at the Scripps Research Translational Institute reviewed data from 16 different groups of COVID-19 patients from around the world to get a better idea of how many cases of coronavirus can likely be traced to people who spread the virus without ever knowing they were infected. Their conclusion: at minimum, 30%, and more likely 40% to 45%. Such so-ca...

We report the case of an 82-year-old male diagnosed with a metastatic castration resistant prostate carcinoma, under chemotherapy with disease progression in treatment with high doses of intravenous morphics. The patient reported abdominal distension with constipation and no vomiting in the emergency department and a distended and tympanic abdomen, without generalized peritonitis was identified during physical examination. A blood analysis showed lactate levels of 0.9 mmol/L and a PCR of 4.2 mg/L without leukocytosis. An extensive colonic pneumatosis with minimum pneumoperitoneum without free fluid was confirmed by a compu...

Authors: Sakai R, Ozaki K, Yamaguchi Y, Kubota N, Takano T, Okubo T, Kimura S, Hoyano M, Yanagawa T, Kashimura T, Minamino T Abstract We herein report a case of pulmonary artery sarcoma (PAS) in a 64-year-old woman. She was admitted to our hospital because of massive genital bleeding from endometrial cancer. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a left pulmonary artery mass and deep vein thrombosis. She underwent anticoagulant therapy for one year. However, the mass lesion gradually expanded. 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/CT showed a positive uptake of FDG by the mass...

Authors: Takaoka H, Uehara M, Saito Y, Ota J, Iida Y, Takahashi M, Sano K, Komuro I, Kobayashi Y Abstract Objective Forward-projected Model-based Iterative Reconstruction SoluTion (FIRST) is a novel reconstruction method. We investigated the improvement in the diagnostic performance for the detection of abnormal late enhancement (LE) in left ventricular myocardium (LVM) using a new-generation 320-slice computed tomography (CT) device with FIRST. Methods This is a retrospective study that included 100 adult patients who underwent cardiac CT including a late phase scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) within 3 mo...

This study aimed to compare the quality of virtual low-keV monoenergetic images vs conventional images reconstructed from dual-layer spectral detector computed tomography (SDCT) for the detection of peritoneal implants of ovarian cancer. Fifty ovarian cancer patients who underwent abdominopelvic SDCT scans were included in this retrospective study. Virtual monoenergetic images at 40 (VMI40) and 50 keV (VMI50), and two conventional images were reconstructed using filtered back projection (FBP) and iterative model reconstruction (IMR) protocols. The mean attenuation of the peritoneal implant, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), ...
