Effects of hospital-acquired pneumonia on long-term recovery and hospital resource utilization following moderate to severe traumatic brain injury

CONCLUSION Individuals with HAP during acute hospitalization have worse long-term prognosis and greater hospital resource utilization. Preventing HAP may be cost-effective and improve long-term recovery for individuals with TBI. Future studies should compare the effectiveness of different prophylaxis methods to prevent HAP. CONCLUSIONSThis study identified patient risk factors associated with increased likelihood of tracheostomy and PEG in patients with hemorrhagic stroke who were critically ill. Additionally, we found that the timing of tracheostomy was associated with length of ICU stay and overall hospital stay, and that the timing of PEG was associated with overall length of hospitalization. Complication rates related to tracheostomy and PEG in this population were minimal. Conclusion: The incidence of VAP is high. Patients of aneurysmal SAH are at higher risk and VAP is as common in patients with supratentorial lesions as in those with infratentorial pathologies. The increase in resistance to the commonly used antibiotics is a cause for concern. Efforts should be taken to evolve more effective preventive measures.
