The role of Tumor-Associated Macrophages in Gastric Cancer development and their potential as a therapeutic target

Gastric cancer (GC) is characterized by high incidence and mortality and it represents the sixth most common cancer type and fifth leading cause of cancer death worldwide [1]. When diagnosed in an advanced stage, GC is characterized by very poor prognosis, with a five-year overall survival rate of about 5% [2]. Historically GC has been classified into two main subgroups, intestinal and diffuse, according to different microscopic features [3]. Several molecular classifications based on comprehensive analyses have been proposed to gain better understanding of GC biology and for a personalized medicine approach [4-6].
