Frequency of thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer in thyroidectomized patients with Graves' disease.

Conclusions: The incidence of thyroid cancer was higher in patients who underwent surgery for GD. In addition to a careful physical examination in the follow-up of the patients with GD, ultrasonographic evaluation should be performed. Surgical treatment should not be delayed in patients with GD when indicated. PMID: 32190140 [PubMed]

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: During thyroidectomy incomplete resection of the thyroid gland may occur. This complicates the imaging surveillance of these patients as residual thyroid needs to be distinguished from local recurrence. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if multiphasic multi-detector computed tomography (4D-MDCT) can differentiate residual nonmalignant thyroid tissue and recurrent thyroid carcinoma after thyroidectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, Hounsfield unit values on multiphasic multidetector CT in precontrast, arterial (25 seconds), venous (55 seconds), and delayed (...

Authors: Gao L, Wang J, Jiang Y, Gao Q, Wang Y, Xi X, Zhang B Abstract To evaluate the effectiveness of the number of central compartment lymph nodes (CLNs) on ultrasound (US) in predicting CLN metastasis (CLNM). We prospectively studied 309 papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) patients who underwent thyroidectomy with CLN dissection at our center from May 2017 to July 2017. The number and features of CLNs were evaluated preoperatively via US. All US examinations were performed using a Philips iU 22 or a GE Logiq 9 machine. Correlations between CLNs observed via preoperative US and amount of CLNM were evaluated. We found...

ConclusionsMicroscopic positive margin was found to be significantly associated with incomplete response after I-131 therapy in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer after adjusting for tumor size, ETE, and cervical lymph node metastasis and also had a trend toward being associated with incomplete response after adjusting for pre-ablative Tg.

This article discusses hereditary MTC in the setting of MEN2 and the treatment options available for it. The first line treatment for this disease is typically a total thyroidectomy and tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Two tyrosine kinase inhibitors, vandetanib and cabozantinib, have been approved for treatment of advanced MTC, but options beyond those are limited. However, several promising treatments are being studied, which are discussed in this review. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of isthmusectomy in the surgical treatment of isthmic PTC. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively studied 121 patients who underwent thyroidectomy with or without central neck dissection (CND) for single isthmic PTC from January 2003 to June 2019. We excluded patients who were clinically suspected to have clinically positive cervical lymph node metastasis and gross extrathyroidal extension or to have cancers at sites other than the thyroid isthmus. Patients were divided into three groups according to the extent of thyroidectomy-total thyroidectomy, lobectomy with isthmusectomy (...

CONCLUSION: Surgery for local persistent/recurrent disease in papillary thyroid carcinoma reduces tumor burden, improves the biochemical and structural disease. Administration of therapeutic RAI after lymph node resections appears to further improve biochemical disease. PMID: 32277658 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

We describe a case of a 79-year-old Thai woman presented with hoarseness and neck mass for 2 months and she had been diagnosed with a 3-cm papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in the right side of the thyroid gland. Later on PTC de-differentiated into SCC within 3 years after initial presentation. Diagnosis: De-differentiation from papillary thyroid carcinoma to squamous cell carcinoma. Interventions: The patient underwent a total thyroidectomy at the initial hospital and received high dose radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment at our hospital 1 month following the surgery and then was lost to follow-up. Two years later sh...

Horm Metab Res 2020; 52: 158-167 DOI: 10.1055/a-1111-8927The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical impact of pre-ablation rhTSH-stimulated fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (F-18 FDG) PET/CT in addition to post-therapeutic whole body radioiodine scanning in patients with intermediate to high risk differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). This was a retrospective single center study including 73 patients with thyroid cancer (44 females, mean age 43.2±16.2 years, 62% papillary, 31% follicular, 7% poorly differentiated). All patients underwent ablative radioiodine treatment ...
