Failure to rescue is not the entire answer to improving open aortic aneurysm repair results but it is an important start

The rapid adoption of endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair, with a 1% to 3% mortality rate has reduced hospital mortality rates to levels rarely achieved in open AAA repair publications. Open repair volumes have declined dramatically in favor of endovascular aortic repair; however, open repair remains a durable option with excellent long-term outcomes but higher early mortality rates. Mortality rates for AAA repair and other major surgical interventions are well known to vary with hospital volumes; however, the factors responsible are not clearly identified.
