MSF Canada Accepting Designated Funds for Typhoon Haiyan Medical Relief Efforts

Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors without Borders (MSF) Canada is accepting designated funds for its medical humanitarian relief efforts in the Philippines for survivors of Typhoon Haiyan. The trucks will travel tonight to Ostende airport, from where two cargo planes will take off tomorrow morning to support the relief effort in the Philippines. MSF emergency teams arrived in Cebu city, the second largest city in the Philippines, on Saturday November 9 to assess the needs. Additional personnel, including medical staff, logisticians and psychologists will be arriving in the next few days. MSF expects to send two doctors and an orthopedic specialist to Tacloban tomorrow, a town devastated when the typhoon first struck the coast.  The situation on the ground is dire. Medical structures have been damaged or destroyed and there is a lack of medical supplies.  There is also little information on the situation in rural and remote areas. Shelter, water and food are expected to be the most immediate needs. The types of injuries MSF medical teams expect to see are fractures and lacerations/cuts. It is important that people receive treatment as soon as possible to avoid complications and infections. MSF medical teams will also monitor for possible outbreaks of infectious diseases.
