Multimodal analgesia in bariatric surgery: not just an intravenous approach

Multimodal analgesia is one of the cornerstones of perioperative medicine [1]. It is based on the assumption that a combination of agents at small doses maximizes the desired effects while minimizing side effects [1]. Multimodal analgesia is recommended for obese patients to reduce or eliminate the use of opioids postoperatively [2]. Typically, multimodal analgesia includes the use of intravenous non-opioid medications with analgesic properties, such as acetaminophen (paracetamol), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, ketamine, α-2 agonists (clonidine or dexmedetomidine), lidocaine, and magnesium.
