Restoration of Parathyroid Function After Change of Phosphate Binder From Calcium Carbonate to Lanthanum Carbonate in Hemodialysis Patients With Suppressed Serum Parathyroid Hormone

Control of phosphate is the most critical in the treatment of chronic kidney disease with mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD). Because calcium-containing phosphate binder to CKD patients is known to induce adynamic bone disease with ectopic calcification by increasing calcium load, we examined the effect of lanthanum carbonate (LaC), a non-calcium containing phosphate binder, to restore bone turnover in 27 hemodialysis patients with suppressed parathyroid function (serum intact parathyroid hormone [iPTH] ≦ 150 pg/mL).

In this report, a 60 years old woman with a past medical history of significant chronic kidney disease undergoing regular hemodialysis, chronic constipation and hepatitis B was admitted to our neurology clinic because of acute intracerebral hemorrhage. She had confusion and right hemiplegia in her neurological examination and required urinary catheterization due to immobilization. Red coloration was observed in urine on the tenth hospital day. Although this coloration was thought to be hematuria, according to urine examination it was not hematuria. Then urine color turned into purple within two days. The next day, because ...

CONCLUSIONS: Morbidity rate is higher in children with aHUS. The renal prognosis and morbidity rate is higher in children with CFH mutations than other children with aHUS. Poor prognosis in aHUS children with CFH mutation depends on the genetic background. PMID: 31705748 [PubMed - in process]

Conclusion A high prevalence of malnutrition and of other risk factors for cardiovascular disease were observed. Such factors included diabetes Mellitus, smoking and former smoker conditions and were associated with malnutrition. Inaddition, it was found that malnourished individuals were more likely to develop cardiovascular disease within 10 years.RESUMO Objetivo Verificar associa ção entre estado nutricional e fatores de riscos cardiovasculares tradicionais e não tradicionais em pacientes em hemodiálise. Métodos Estudo transversal com 132 pacientes maiores de 18 anos em hemodiál...

Abstract Animal models of chronic kidney failure (CKF) have been developed for the pharmacodynamic evaluation of various phosphate binders that are used clinically to treat hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic kidney disease. However, these models represent different disease states and severities, depending on the experimental conditions and are not clearly defined for pharmacological evaluation. In addition, experimental models have not yet been established for artificial dialysis. The purpose of this study was to confirm the utility of the various rat models of CKF and the mini-pig model of hemodialysis as...

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of anemia and its associated factors among CKD patients at the University of Gondar hospital, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from May 1, to September 30, 2018. Consecutive sampling was used to recruit 251 study subjects. Patients were interviewed to obtain demographic data, and the patients' medical records were reviewed to obtain information on relevant medical history and laboratory parameters. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 20. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify independent...

AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate the quality of life, cognitive and functional capacity of older adult patients undergoing hemodialysis who are 80  years of age or older and compare them to older adults without chronic kidney disease (CKD) treated at a geriatrics outpatient clinic.MethodFirst, 103 older adult patients undergoing hemodialysis and 103 older adults without CKD matched by gender and age were evaluated. Cognitive aspects as evaluated by the mini mental state examination, the Boston Naming Test and verbal fluency were analyzed; comorbidities according to the Charlson ’s comorbidity index; social support t...

AbstractEnd stage renal disease requiring hemodialysis (HD) is frequent and coronary artery disease (CAD) is a common comorbidity. It is associated with bleeding and ischemic events. Platelet reactivity is a well-known determinant of both. However, the impact of HD due to end stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) on platelet reactivity is unknown. Therefore in this study, we evaluated platelet reactivity during hemodialysis in patients with CKD and coronary artery disease. 22 patients with CKD, HD and CAD were included in this study. Light transmission aggregometry (LTA) and flow cytometry were used for evaluating platelet fu...
