Treatment of Pain and Opioid Use Disorder

In 2016, more than 400,000 Americans were prescribed methadone or buprenorphine for opioid use disorder treatment. The number of people on medications for opioid use disorder treatment is expected to increase now that nurse practitioners and physician assistants can prescribe buprenorphine for this treatment. Pain management nurses are faced with the challenges of managing both acute and chronic pain in individuals taking medications for opioid use disorder treatment across the continuum of care.
