3DManaging Chronic Pain the ED

Pain remains one of the primary complaints that causes patients to seek care in the emergency department. Overall, there has been a significant increase in the number of patients who present to the emergency department with a pain complaint. Pain can be either acute or chronic. Patients express many reasons why they choose to come to the emergency department for care related to their pain. Reasons include lack of funds to consult a pain management specialist; work hours which do not allow them to be seen by a primary care provider; trying to deal with the pain on their own and being encouraged or told to use the ED for care by their primary care providers.
