An analysis of patient's and disease related factors predictive of the outcomes of surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome.

CONCLUSION:  Of all considered patient's and disease related factors, the baseline clinical severity expressed in the Levine symptom severity scores had appeared to be the strongest predictor of better outcomes of surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome. PMID: 32135549 [PubMed - in process]

Abstract Purpose: To determine whether shock wave therapy could improve symptoms and hand function in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.Materials and methods: Medline, Embase, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, OpenGrey, CNKI, VIP, Wang Fang databases, and China Biological Medicine were searched, from inception to December 2019.Results: Ten trials involving 433 patients (501 wrists) were included in this systematic review. The shock wave therapy was observed to have a significant effect on pain relief (MD: -0.60, 95% CI: -1.16 to -0.05, p = 0.03), ...

Abstract Objective: The effects of vitamin D on the central and peripheral nervous system continue to be investigated today. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate pain and electrophysiologic response in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) who have undergone replacement therapy due to vitamin D deficiency. Methods: Fifty female patients diagnosed with mild and moderate CTS and accompanied by vitamin D deficiency were included in this study. Nerve conduction study (NCS) was performed before and after vitamin D replacement, and the patient ’ s pain was evaluated with Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Results: Whe...

Rationale: Lipomas are common benign tumors, constituting 16% of soft tissue mesenchymal tumors. They usually occur under the skin or in the large muscles of the thigh, shoulder, or upper arm. There are few reported cases of lipomas located in the forearm and hand muscles, accounting for less than 1% of all lipomas. Patient concerns: A 47-year old man presented with a history of swelling and accompanying pain in the left wrist for 2 years. Diagnoses: The patient was diagnosed with intramuscular lipoma in the pronator quadratus. Interventions: The mass was resected completely with wide-awake technique. Outcomes:...

Abstract Hot sand baths are used for the treatment musculoskeletal diseases. The aim of this study was to assess beneficial effect of black sand bathing in the treatment of antenatal carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Study was conducted in single case with CTS of the right dominant hand. The treatment time was 20 min/day, 5 days/week for 2 weeks. CTS were evaluated using a visual analogue scale (VAS), pinch gauge dynamometer and Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ) with electrophysiological studies at baseline and at week 2. Pain intensity (VAS) was decreased (34.2%), Tip, Key and Tripod pinch strengths were...

Conclusions: WALANT offered a better intraoperative experience. Tourniquet pain, preoperative preparation basics, and the extended anesthesia duration are likely the major drawbacks of the intravenous regional anesthesia method.

Conclusions: A positive criteria for CTS, neck and shoulder pain is identified in our study as being due to long-term use of mobile devices. Further, combination tests like Phalen's with pressure provocation tests proved accurate in conforming CTS. Future research is needed to confirm the diagnostic utility of these independent and combined clinical tests in less prevalent settings, including general dental practitioners and occupational worksites.Trial registration: The current study is registered in King Khalid University, College of dentistry ethical committee SRC/REG/2016-17/107.

AbstractPurpose of ReviewApproximately 20% of patients undergoing surgery develop persistent lower extremity pain following total knee arthroplasty. Animal studies have confirmed that prolonged tourniquet time increases the risk of endoneural ischemia and can mediate or modulate the development of chronic pain. The use of Near InfraRed Spectroscopy (NIRS) adjacent to nerve tissue, previously described as ONG has been shown to detect early neural compromise and has demonstrated clinical utility in carpal tunnel diagnosis.Recent FindingsIn this pilot study, we recruited 10 healthy adult volunteers to undergo oxyneurography (...

AbstractCarpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most frequent entrapment neuropathy of peripheral nerves, with an incidence of 1 –3 patients in 1000. CTS typically occurs between 45 and 60 years of age, and it is more frequent in women than in men. The main cause of CTS is chronic compression of the median nerve and ischemic suffering secondary to increased pressure in the carpal tunnel. There are many possible causes of C TS, which can be differentiated into idiopathic causes, which include most cases, and secondary causes. Classical CTS diagnosis is based on the patient’s clinical examination and electrophys...

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, roughly 1 in 6 U.S. workers, some 26 million people, worked either partly or fully from home. Now that number has grown significantly, as states are requiring non-essential employees to stay home. If you’re one of these people, you may be noticing new aches and pains that you did not experience at the office. That’s because even though it isn’t mandated, many companies follow an ANSI-HFS standard in the design of their computer workstations, furnishing the office with the ergonomic furniture and accessories. Most residential settings, however, simply don’t h...

Authors: Yoshida A, Iwatsuki K, Hoshiyama M, Hirata H Abstract BACKGROUND: Several studies on carpal tunnel syndrome have reported pain that exists beyond the median nerve territory of the affected hand. However, the mechanism is unknown. PURPOSE: We investigated the cause of extra-territorial pain by the analysis of clinical assessments and cortical activity using magnetoencephalography. METHODS: To compare patients with and without extra-territorial pain, fourteen patients with carpal tunnel syndrome were assessed using clinical examination, such as patients' profile, paresthesia, physical tests, and psyc...
