Maternal Vitamin D Deficiency Causes Sustained Impairment of Lung Structure and Function and Increases Susceptibility to Hyperoxia-Induced Lung Injury in Infant Rats.

CONCLUSIONS: Maternal VDD causes abnormal airway, alveolar and vascular growth, as well as impaired lung function and airways hyper-reactivity in infancy. In addition, VDD pups were more susceptible for worsened lung structure and function after exposure to hyperoxia after birth. We speculate that fetal disruption of VD signaling impairs airway and distal lung structure and function during infancy, and risk for late respiratory disease.
