Pharmacological interventions for promoting smoking cessation during pregnancy.

CONCLUSIONS: NRT used for smoking cessation in pregnancy may increase smoking cessation rates in late pregnancy. However, this evidence is of low certainty, as the effect was not evident when potentially biased, non-placebo-controlled RCTs were excluded from the analysis. Future studies may therefore change this conclusion. We found no evidence that NRT has either positive or negative impacts on birth outcomes; however, the evidence for some of these outcomes was also judged to be of low certainty due to imprecision and inconsistency. We found no evidence that bupropion may be an effective aid for smoking cessation during pregnancy, and there was little evidence evaluating its safety in this population. Further research evidence on the efficacy and safety of pharmacotherapy and EC use for smoking cessation in pregnancy is needed, ideally from placebo-controlled RCTs that achieve higher adherence rates and that monitor infants' outcomes into childhood. Future RCTs of NRT should investigate higher doses than those tested in the studies included in this review. PMID: 32129504 [PubMed - in process]

Authors: Park YG, Choi J, Seol JW Abstract During pregnancy, the uterus undergoes intense neovascularization and vascular remodeling to supply oxygen and nutrients to the embryo. During this period, progesterone secreted from the ovary has effects on vascular remodeling in the endometrium and interacts with angiogenic factors. However, the exact mechanism of uterine vascular remodeling during pregnancy is poorly understood. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the association between angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2), one of the angiopoietins, and intrauterine vessel remodeling during pregnancy, and to d...

Conclusion: These observations definitively demonstrate an important role of PFN1 in mediating cell-cell adhesion during the initial stage of embryo implantation and suggest a potential therapeutic target or novel biomarker for patients suffering from implantation failure. Authors: Wood SH, Sills ES Abstract The inverse correlation between maternal age and pregnancy rate represents a major challenge for reproductive endocrinology. The high embryo ploidy error rate in failed in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles reflects genetic misfires accumulated by older oocytes over time. Despite the application of different follicular recruitment protocols during IVF, gonadotropin modifications are generally futile in addressing such damage. Even when additional oocytes are retrieved, quality is frequently poor. Older oocytes with serious cytoplasmic and/or chromosomal errors are often harvested f...

The aim of this study was to compare the placental gene expression profiles including mRNA and lnRNAs from pregnant women from four study groups; PE, IUGR, PE-IUGR and normal pregnancy (NP). Gene expression microarray analysis was performed on placental tissue obtained...

This article aims to provide an updated review of the most recent data around hormonal contraceptives and anti-retroviral therapy.Recent FindingsPrior data have suggested possible pharmacologic interactions between certain hormonal contraceptives and anti-retroviral therapy. The most significant interactions implicated include those between progestin-based contraceptive implants and efavirenz as well as between combined hormonal contraceptives and protease inhibitors. Most past studies, however, feature small sample sizes with few clinical outcomes reported.SummaryRecent data since 2017 have largely affirmed prior studies ...
