Light ‐chain and transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis in severe aortic stenosis: prevalence, screening possibilities, and outcome

ConclusionBoth TTR ‐ and AL‐CA can accompany severe AS. Parameters solely based on ECG and echocardiography allow for the identification of the majority of CA‐AS. In the present cohort, CA did not significantly worsen prognosis 15.3 months after TAVR.

Authors: Xu J, Zhang M, Turk EA, Zhang L, Grant E, Ying K, Golland P, Adalsteinsson E Abstract The performance and diagnostic utility of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in pregnancy is fundamentally constrained by fetal motion. Motion of the fetus, which is unpredictable and rapid on the scale of conventional imaging times, limits the set of viable acquisition techniques to single-shot imaging with severe compromises in signal-to-noise ratio and diagnostic contrast, and frequently results in unacceptable image quality. Surprisingly little is known about the characteristics of fetal motion during MRI and here we pr...

Authors: Egger B, Schirmer MD, Dubost F, Nardin MJ, Rost NS, Golland P Abstract We propose and demonstrate a joint model of anatomical shapes, image features and clinical indicators for statistical shape modeling and medical image analysis. The key idea is to employ a copula model to separate the joint dependency structure from the marginal distributions of variables of interest. This separation provides flexibility on the assumptions made during the modeling process. The proposed method can handle binary, discrete, ordinal and continuous variables. We demonstrate a simple and efficient way to include binary, discr...

Conclusions: Excellent accuracy was found for types 1A, 1B, and 3C deformities (ends of spectrum). There was more variation among surgeons in differentiating between one-column (types 2A and 2B) and two-column (types 3A and 3B) deficiencies, as surgeons often failed to recognize the radiological signs of posterior column failure. This failure to identify column deficiencies can potentially alter kyphosis management. There was excellent consensus among surgeons in the recommendation of type 2 osteotomy; however, some variation was observed in their choice for other osteotomies. Authors: Chick G, Victor J, Hollevoet N Abstract Benign peripheral nerve tumours are rare lesions. The surgical treatment and clinical outcomes depend on the resectability. The aim of this retrospective study was to identify clinical or radiological features that may predict the surgical technique that should be used to improve clinical outcome. Eighty-two patients were diagnosed with solitary benign peripheral nerve tumours. Fifty-five tumours were surgically resectable, and 27 were nonresectable. Pre-operative magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound were used, which were predictive of the neural origin of the t...

This study aimed to portray the characteristics, process variables, and sensorimotor outcomes of patients who had received their usual post-stroke in-patient rehabilitation in three stroke rehabilitation units in Quebec in 2013-2014. Method: We assessed patients (n = 264) at admission and discharge with a subset of a standardized assessment toolkit consisting of observational and performance-based assessment tools. Results: The patients, with a mean age of 60.3 (SD 15.4) years, were admitted 27.7 (SD 8.4) days post-stroke onset. They had a mean admission FIM score of 83.0 (SD 24.0), a mean length of stay of 48.4 ...

Abstract The rare earth element (REE) contamination of urban wastewater, which was collected from open sewers and the inlet of a wastewater treatment plant in Cotonou (Benin), was assessed. The drinking water distributed to the inhabitants of Cotonou and water samples from private wells were also analyzed. The sampling occurred between October and December 2016 and the samples were analyzed by ICP-MS. Although the only magnetic resonance imaging facility in Cotonou opened in November 2016, pollution by anthropogenic gadolinium (Gd), which is included in phase contrast agents, was observed: there was 30-620 times m...
