Association between negative preoperative axillary node staging and surgical sentinel node biopsy in patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer: A retrospective analysis.

CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative ultrasonography is very accurate in the detecting of axillary LN metastases. Patients with primary tumour size ≥ 1 cm, with grade ≥ 2 no special type carcinomas (NST - no special type, also known as invasive ductal carcinoma) or multicentric lobular invasive cancer should undergo a more thorough ultrasound evaluation. We present a rare case of Paget disease of the nipple without the typical characteristics, detected by simple nipple scraping technique. A 62-year-old woman presented with a small fissure on the left nipple with scant clear nippledischarge. There were no other changes to the nipple-areola complex. The mammography and ultrasound were unremarkable. However, nipplescraping provided the immediate cytological diagnosis of Paget disease. Breast MRI with core biopsy showed high grade ductal carcinoma in situwith suggestion of microinvasion, confirmed histologically after mastectomy. Nipple scraping is a simple and inexpensive tec...

AbstractIntroductionBreast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed female cancer. Diagnosis in younger women (under 35  years) is different to their older counterparts, and mammography is not considered as sensitive in this cohort. Consequentially, younger patients may present later with more advanced disease.MethodsThis is a retrospective analysis of a prospectively updated database containing consecutive patients who presented to the symptomatic breast unit of Galway University Hospital between 2009 and 2015. Patient clinicopathologic factors, clinical examination features, diagnostic radiological modalities and Bi-RA...

Barranger E Abstract OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of systematic radiological review by breast specialist radiologist of malignant breast lesion imaging on the therapeutic management of patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data collection was performed for patients with histopathologically proved breast cancer or suspicious breast lesion on imaging realized out of our institution. Patients underwent systematic mammary and axillary ultrasound, imaging review and if necessary complementary mammographic images. We analyzed the number of additional breast biopsies and axillary lymph node fine needle aspiration (...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewWe aim to review the appearance of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) across the spectrum of imaging modalities used in common clinical practice.Recent FindingsChanges in technology and clinical breast cancer screening patterns have impacted the imaging evaluation of DCIS. DCIS classically presents as asymptomatic calcifications in women undergoing screening mammography. The replacement of traditional 2D mammography with digital breast tomosynthesis has changed the typical appearance of screen-detected DCIS. Ultrasound is traditionally utilized to detect DCIS in women with clinical symptoms, but effor...

ConclusionDCIS cases with duct abnormalities on ultrasound were investigated in this study. The important characteristics were as follows: (1) the distribution of ductal dilatation was focal or segmental, (2) solid parts were present in the dilated ducts, (3) the distribution of internal echoes was continuous or multiple, (4) the shape of solid echoes was broad-based and/or irregular, and (5) internal echoes were sometimes accompanied by echogenic foci. Accurate evaluation of these findings may be useful for diagnosing DCIS. Although the duct abnormalities are included in “ASSOCIATED FEATURES” in ACR BI-RADS AT...

CONCLUSIONS: In the absence of clinical findings during physical breast examination, the addition of breast ultrasonography does not provide additional information to supplement the physical examination in self-referred women under age 40 who do not have any major risk factors for developing breast cancer. ConclusionSince accessory axillary breast tissue is out of the image of screening breast examination, it is necessary for the oncologists to be aware of this entity and associated pathologies. Their preventive excision in high risk women can also be considered.
