The State of Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines: A Question and Answer Summary

It has come to our attention that many of you are being urged, pressured, or coerced into adopting the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines on breast cancer screening that suggest delaying screening until the age of 50 and then screening every 2 years. Others are being asked to support the American Cancer Society (ACS) guidelines that suggest starting at the age of 45 annually to age 55 and then every 2 years after that. Unfortunately, your colleagues who are pressuring you may not fully understand the data and may be simply promoting the guidelines of their societies.
