Diagnosis is commonly based on symptoms and radiographs, but there is a growing interest in detecting novel biomarkers, in serum, urine and synovial fluid, which can be predictors of disease onset and progression.Areas covered: This review provides an overview of the main biomarkers currently used in OA clinical practice, with a focus on lubricin, a surface glycoprotein secreted in the synovial fluid that lubricates the cartilage and reduces the coefficient of friction within the joint. Key findings of the last years are presented throughout the article.Expert opinion: Analysis of biomarkers might suggest personalised protocols of treatment, guide the classification of OA phenotypes, contribute to precision medicine, avoid further unnecessary exams, facilitate drug discovery or refine treatment guidelines. Conclusion This is the first large epidemiologic study to suggest that football participation, including in the teen years, may be detrimental toward knee health. Prospective studies evaluating football players are warranted.

CONCLUSIONS: The results do not support that serum levels of 25(OH) vitamin D are associated with the risks of knee OA, except perhaps with progression of knee OA. In addition, vitamin D supplementation may not have a clinically significant effect on pain control or structure (tibial cartilage volume and JSW) progression in patients with knee OA. ConclusionThis study demonstrated that the AUC for the surgical treatment of knee OA can be applied easily in a clinical setting. Most of the treatments provided at our institution were appropriate and in agreement with the AUC recommendations. Additionally, the AUC had a web-based application that was easy to use and simple for identifying treatment recommendations.Level of evidenceRetrospective study, level IV.
Conclusions: Participants exhibited good quadriceps strength and bone properties regardless of their KL grade. Relatively high mechanical loading of muscle and bone incurred while walking independently, likely explaining this result. Clinically, this study demonstrated the absence of correlations between KL grade and quadriceps strength and bone properties, as was previously reported in studies showing the absence of a correlation between KL grade and pain.

We report a case of 26-year-old woman with left breast cancer referred for 18F-NaF PET-CT. She is complaining of right thumb and wrist pain. Findings are negative for bone secondaries. Dedicated hands views are acquired on positron emission scanner which shows focal uptake at 1st carpometacarpcal and 2nd metacarpophalangeal joints. ConclusionIndividuals did not report an increase in knee pain, stiffness or disability in their ACL ‐deficient knee. Only disability was associated with worsening severity of radiographic OA in ACL‐deficient knees.
