CONCLUSION: Penetrating trauma in children and adolescents is associated with significant mortality and morbidity. There are similarities with the management of these injuries in adults, but further work is required to ensure that paediatric management algorithms are evidence based. CONCLUSIONS: Region-dependent changes in gut transit time is associated with early NEC development in preterm pigs. How gut dysmotility is related to NEC in preterm infants requires further investigations. IMPACT: Using preterm pigs as a model for preterm infants, we show that gut transit time, using serial x-ray contrast imaging, was changed in individuals with NEC-like lesions before they showed the typical radiological signs of NEC. Thus prolonged transit time across the entire gut was recorded when NEC lesions appeared in the small intestine but not when lesions were detected only in the colon.Until now, recording...

This study suggests that A. niger spores might not be easily inactivated by exposure to space radiation alone and that current planetary protection guidelines should be revisited, considering the high resistance of fungal spores.

In this study, a dataset of X-ray images from patients with common bacterial pneumonia, confirmed Covid-19 disease, and normal incidents, was utilized for the automatic detection of the Coronavirus  disease. The aim of the study is to evaluate the performance of state-of-the-art convolutional neural network architectures proposed over the recent years for medical image classification. Specifically, the procedure called Transfer Learning was adopted. With transfer learning, the detection of v arious abnormalities in small medical image datasets is an achievable target, often yielding remarkable results. The datase...

AbstractPurposeTo evaluate the 3D deformity of the acetabula and lower limbs in subjects with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and their relationship with spino-pelvic alignment.MethodsTwo hundred and seventy-four subjects with AIS (frontal Cobb: 33.5 ° ± 18° [10°–110°]) and 84 controls were enrolled. All subjects underwent full-body biplanar X-rays with subsequent 3D reconstructions. Classic spino-pelvic and lower limb parameters were collected as well as acetabular parameters: acetabular orientation in the 3 planes (tilt, anteversion and abduction), center–edge angle ...

Abstract Microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) utilizes highly collimated synchrotron generated x-rays to create narrow planes of high dose radiation for the treatment of tumors. Individual microbeams have a typical width of 30-50 µm and are separated by a distance of 200-500 µm. The dose delivered at the center of the beam is lethal to cells in the microbeam path, on the order of hundreds of Grays (Gy). The tissue between each microbeam is spared and helps aid in the repair of adjacent damaged tissue. Radiation interactions within the peak of the microbeam, such as the photoelectric effect and incoherent ...

The use of X-rays as an alternative modality to either gamma irradiation or electron beam irradiation for the sterilization of medical devices has become a topical subject over the last two or three years. The drivers are the improved capability of modern-day X-ray generation systems and a desire to develop a range of competitive and sustainable sterilization technologies. The Panel on Gamma and Electron Irradiation has compiled a short guidance document on the steps required when switching radiation sterilization technology, for example, from gamma or electron beam to X-ray. The guidance clarifies the requirements of ISO ...

This study aimed at assessing whether secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) may influence the risk of VFs in middle-aged patients with HF.Methods84 patients (44 males, median age 48.5  years, range 43–65) with HF were prospectively evaluated at the baseline and after 36-month follow-up for bone mineral density (BMD) and VFs by quantitative morphometry on chest X-rays. Serum PTH, calcium, 25-hydroxyvitamin D and 24-h-urinary calcium were evaluated at the baseline and every 6– 12 months during the study period.ResultsAt baseline, SHPT, hypovitaminosis D and VFs were found in 43 patients (51.2%), 73 patie...

‚ÄčThe wrist is not commonly aspirated in the emergency department, but emergent arthrocentesis may be indicated for extreme or concerning cases, and tapping the wrist to determine the underlying pathology or relieve pain may be of great value. The synovial fluid from the joint space can be analyzed for crystals, infection, and blood. This information may help determine the overall plan and aid in decision-making and consultation. The ultimate treatment plan may include admission, intravenous antibiotics, multiple aspirations, and even surgical washout.A swollen, painful wrist that is hot to the touch is concerning for sep...
