Vesical schistosomiasis and squamous cell carcinoma associated with Schistosoma haematobium: a re-emerging neglected tropical disease in Tehran, Iran

Publication date: Available online 21 February 2020Source: Urology Case ReportsAuthor(s): Leila Haghighi, Mohsen Akbaribazm, Zahra Arab-Mazar, Mohsen RahimiAbstractHematobium species of this parasite tends to bladder and mesenteric arteries and it causes lesions in the bladder wall, urethra, and renal tubes. A 25-year-old man living in Tehran (a non-endemic and very rare area for schistosoma) suffers from symptoms such as hematuria with suprapubic pain, dysuria, fever, nausea and vomiting. Urine analysis showed a lot of red blood cells, after using cystoscopy of the area and receiving a bladder biopsy, a definitive diagnosis of schistosomiasis was made and after determining the extent of damage to the urinary tract, appropriate treatment with surgery and praziquantel (40 mg/kg) were prescribed.

In this study, we identified reliable miRNA clusters that can be used to subclassify HNSCC tumors as well as other squamous tumors of other anatomic locations. An institutional discovery cohort was generated using miRNA expression data from microarrays, and this was validated using publicly available next-generation microRNA sequencing data from TCGA. Further analysis of these subtypes revealed distinct biological and clinical features of HNSCC tumors based on the miRNA expression profiles, which provides new insights into the pathogenesis and treatment of HNSCC.

The field of abdominal organ transplantation is multifaceted, with the clinician balancing recipient comorbidities, risks of the surgical procedure, and the pathophysiology of immunosuppression to ensure optimal outcomes. An underappreciated element throughout this process is acute pain management related to the surgical procedure. As the opioid epidemic continues to grow with increasing numbers of transplant candidates on opioids as well the increase in the development of enhanced recovery after surgery protocols, there is a need for greater focus on optimal postoperative pain control to minimize opioid use and improve ou...

The objective of our study was to determine the impact of multiple listing on LT rates. Methods. We examined the United Network of Organ Sharing database from 2002 to 2016 after excluding those listed for multiple organs, hepatocellular carcinoma, or living donor LT. The waitlist mortality and LT rates for the ML groups and the single listed (SL) group were compared after stratifying patients by the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) with a cutoff at 15 (1 center (ML group). Of the ML groups, 2028 (2.4%) were listed at multiple donor service areas but within the same region (ML-SR) and 1556 (1.9%) listed in differ...
