Electrocardiographic abnormalities among people with HIV in Shanghai, China.

Electrocardiographic abnormalities among people with HIV in Shanghai, China. Biosci Trends. 2020 Feb 20;: Authors: Shen F, Zhu B, Ding Y, Gao M, He N Abstract People living with HIV (PLWH) have an excess risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities are independently predictive of incident cardiovascular events in the general population. Our study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and correlates of ECG abnormalities among PLWH in Shanghai, China. We used a cross-sectional design to collect data from Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center, China. A total of 587 HIV-infected patients aged between 18 and 75 years were recruited between January 2015 and February 2016. The overall prevalence of any type of ECG abnormalities was 53.3%. The prevalence of sinus tachycardia, ST-T segment elevation and left ventricular hypertrophy was 23.0%, 18.1%, and 6.8%, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated that ST-T segment elevation was positively associated with higher baseline HIV viral load (≥ 4 log10 copies/mL), and sinus tachycardia was negatively associated with older age but positively associated with lower CD4 cell count, higher baseline HIV viral load (≥ 4 log10 copies/mL) and higher lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) level (≥133 mg/dL). Any coded ECG abnormality was positively associated with higher baseline HIV viral load (≥ 4 log10 copies/mL). ECG abnormalities including sinus tachycardia and ST-T ...

Sensors, Vol. 20, Pages 2073: A Comparative Study of Brachial–Ankle Pulse Wave Velocity and Heart–Finger Pulse Wave Velocity in Korean Adults Sensors doi: 10.3390/s20072073 Authors: Jaegeol Cho Hyun Jae Baek Arterial stiffness is considered an index of vascular aging. The brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) method is widely used because of its proven effectiveness; and the pulse wave velocity measurement method using both electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG) is actively being studied due to the convenience of measurement and the possibility of miniaturization. The aim ...

Authors: Shao C, Wang J, Tian J, Tang YD Abstract In most developed countries, coronary artery disease (CAD), mostly caused by atherosclerosis of coronary arteries, is one of the primary causes of death. From 1990s to 2000s, mortality caused by acute MI declined up to 50%. The incidence of CAD is related with age, gender, economic, etc. Atherosclerosis contains some highly correlative processes such as lipid disturbances, thrombosis, inflammation, vascular smooth cell activation, remodeling, platelet activation, endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, altered matrix metabolism, and genetic factors. Risk factors ...

Abstract Anatomy and Physiology courses taught at community colleges tend to focus laboratory hours primarily on anatomy as opposed to physiology. However, research demonstrates that, when instructors utilize active learning approaches (such as in laboratory settings) where students participate in their own learning, students have improved outcomes, such as higher test scores and better retention of material. To provide community college students with opportunities for active learning in physiology, we developed two laboratory exercises to engage students in cardiac and skeletal muscle physiology. We utilized low-...

Evaluation of chest pain (CP) in the emergency department (ED) frequently employs a non-invasive strategy, including coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), stress echocardiography (SE) or myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI). We sought to report the real-world experience of utilizing CCTA, compared to SE and MPI at an urban hospital ED. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of consecutively enrolled patients presenting with CP who had normal or non-diagnostic ECGs, negative initial troponin-T, at least intermediate risk based on modified Diamond-Forrester criteria (mDF), and who underwent CCTA, SE, or MPI based...
