Ability of the COPD Assessment Test to evaluate the lung ‐specific quality of life in systemic sclerosis‐associated interstitial lung disease

ConclusionsOur study suggests that the CAT can be applied to evaluate the lung ‐specific quality of life in SSc‐ILD similar to IIP regarding the pulmonary function, but it should be noted that pulmonary arterial hypertension in SSc‐ILD influences the CAT score.

Diagnosis of IPF requires considerable expertise and experience. Since publication of the international IPF guideline in the year 2011 and Update 2018 several studies and technical advances occurred, which made a new assessment of the diagnostic process mandatory. In view of the a...

In this report, we describe two patients with anticentriole antibodies-positive SSc-PAH who were treated with pulmonary vasodilators. Both cases were elderly women with poor physical conditions and clinical findings of SSc. Case 1 was resistant to combination therapy with pulmonary vasodilators; in Case 2, hemodynamic improvement was obtained by upfront combination therapy at an early stage. Because anticentriole antibodies-positive SSc-PAH rapidly deteriorates, careful hemodynamic observation and timely aggressive use of pulmonary vasodilators should be considered. Authors: Sugimoto K, Yoshihisa A, Nakazato K, Yokokawa T, Misaka T, Oikawa M, Kobayashi A, Yamaki T, Kunii H, Ishida T, Takeishi Y Abstract Pulmonary hypertension (PH) caused by left-sided heart disease (LHD-PH) is classified into 2 types: isolated post-capillary PH (Ipc-PH) and combined pre- and post-capillary PH (Cpc-PH). However, the impact of pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) or diastolic pressure gradient (DPG) on the prognosis of LHD-PH has varied among previous studies. Thus, we verified the significance of PVR or DPG on the prognosis of LHD-PH in our series. We analyzed 243 consecutive LHD-PH patients. The...

This article discusses how image analysis and machine learning have enabled comprehensive characterization of kidney morphology for development of automated diagnostic and prognostic renal pathology applications. Recent findings The primordial digital pathology informatics work employed classical image analysis and machine learning to prognosticate renal disease. Although this classical approach demonstrated tremendous potential, subsequent advancements in hardware technology rendered artificial neural networks ‘(ANNs) the method of choice for machine vision in computational pathology’. Offering rapid and re...

Purpose of review The goal of this review is to present recent models of the filtration barrier that may suggest mechanism-based treatments for proteinuric renal disease. The vast majority of renal failure occurs in diseases of glomerular proteinuria. The physiology of the filtration barrier remains incompletely understood, preventing invention of mechanism-based therapies. Research is currently dominated by molecular biology approaches to the kidney instead of engineering-based filtration and transport models. Recent findings Reexamination of two older paradigms (basement membrane and slit diaphragm) and critical ana...

Severity score systems can support rapid, correct selection of patient routes after hospital admittance. No score system has been available for emergency respiratory conditions though it is important to quickly decide whether such patients are admitted to non-invasive respiratory unit (NIRU) or open pulmonary ward. Therefore, we have formed a score system and tested it on 62 patients who underwent emergency, non-oncological pulmonary admission in October 2015 at our Department. Scores were higher if patient had tachypnoe, tachycardia, hypo- or hypertension, O2 saturation, known severe non-respiratory disease, high or low bo...
