Development of a Nomogram for Predicting Blood Transfusion Risk After Hemiarthroplasty for Femoral Neck Fractures in Elderly Patients.

CONCLUSIONS We found a correlation between blood transfusion requirement and low preoperative Hb, longer time to surgery, general anesthesia, longer surgery duration, and higher IBL, and we then developed a nomogram. Our nomogram model can be used to evaluate the transfusion risk for FNF patients after HA, and provides better guidance for clinicians to intervene perioperatively, so as to reduce the incidence of blood transfusion. CONCLUSION: Low preoperative AT level is associated with increased transfusion of RBC and FFP on CPB in neonates and infants undergoing congenital heart surgery. Low preoperative AT level did not result in coagulation activation after CPB and after surgery. PMID: 32939767 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Abstract BACKGROUND: Manual processes for verifying patient identification before blood transfusion and documenting this pretransfusion safety check are prone to errors, and compliance with manual systems is especially poor in urgent operating room settings. An automated, electronic barcode scanner system would be expected to improve pretransfusion verification and documentation. METHODS: Audits were conducted of blood transfusion documentation under a manual paper system from January to October 2014. An electronic barcode scanning system was developed to streamline transfusion safety checking and automate do...

CONCLUSION We reported a U-shaped relationship between severe peri-operative bleeding and pre-operative fibrinogen levels. While a low-level of fibrinogen appears to be associated with a high risk of bleeding, a high level does not necessarily protect the patient against such a risk and could even be a risk factor for peri-operative bleeding.

CONCLUSIONS: Severe rigid idiopathic scoliosis treated with single-staged PSF utilizing a dual attending surgeon strategy demonstrated an average correction rate of 50.9%, operation duration of 215.5 min, and postoperative hospital stay of 76.9 h with a 9.8% perioperative complication rate. Authors: Bohl DD, Idarraga AJP, Hamid KS, Holmes GB, Lin J, Lee S Abstract BACKGROUND: Total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA and TKA) are performed more commonly than total ankle arthroplasty (TAA), so patients and the orthopaedic community are more familiar with the likelihood of complications after THA and TKA than after TAA. The present study places early complication rates after TAA in the context of those after THA and TKA. METHODS: Patients who underwent TAA, THA, or TKA during 2006 to 2016 as part of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program were identified. Multivariate regression was used to com...

In this study, we assessed the association between preoperative hemoglobin and red blood cell transfusion in children undergoing spine surgery after the implementation of our preoperative iron supplementation protocol. METHOD: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent posterior spinal fusion surgery between January 2013 and December 2017 and received preoperative iron supplementation. We used uni- and multivariable logistic regression to determine the association between preoperative hemoglobin level and red blood cell transfusion in patients receiving iron supplementation. RESULTS: A total ...
