CONCLUSION: Contact endoscopy showed the same high sensitivity and specificity with low inter- and intra-observer variability in detecting post-radiotherapy failures in cancer of the upper aerodigestive tract as has been shown in non-irradiated tissues in earlier studies. AbstractThe usefulness of whole-body 18-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG)-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission (PET)/computed tomography (CT) is established for assessment of disease staging, detection of early disease recurrence, therapeutic evaluation, and predicting prognosis in various malignancies; and for evaluating the spread of inflammation. However, the role of FDG-PET/CT for the liver is limited because CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide an accurate diagnosis of most tumors. In addition, in other potentially useful roles there are several pitfalls in the interpretation of FDG uptake in PET/CT imaging. ...

Immunotherapies harnessing T cell immunity have shown remarkable clinical success for the management of cancer. However, only a proportion of patients benefit from these treatments. The presence of type I interferon (IFN) within the tumor microenvironment is critical for driving effective tumor-specific T cell immunity. Individuals can produce 12 distinct subtypes of IFNα, which all signal through a common receptor. Despite reported differences in anti-viral potencies, the concept that distinct IFNα subtypes can improve anti-cancer treatments remains unclear. We tested whether expression of unique IFNα su...

Conclusion: Although very rare, benign cyst from presacral space can become malignant transformation. This highlights the importance of pre-operative diagnostic tests and evaluation to correctly identify the source of the primary cancer, which is crucial prior to starting adjuvant therapy.

Authors: LaBerge GS, Duvall E, Grasmick Z, Haedicke K, Galan A, Leverett J, Baswan S, Yim S, Pawelek J Abstract The relationship between skin color and skin cancer is well established: the less melanin in one's skin the greater the risk for developing skin cancer. This review is in two parts. First, we summarize the current understanding of the cutaneous pigmentary system and trace melanin from its synthesis in the pigment cell melanosomes through its transfer to keratinocytes. We also present new methods for reducing melanin content in hyper-pigmented areas of skin such as solar lentigenes, melasma, and post-infla...

Authors: Suozzi K, Turban J, Girardi M Abstract Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure is well established as the major environmental risk factor for the development of melanoma, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Additional risk factors including genetic mutations, other environmental agents, and immune status are important in modulating the effects of UVR. Dermatologists advocate a multi-pronged approach to minimizing UVR exposure including lifestyle modifications, UVR protective clothing, and topically applied sun-protective products, i.e. sunscreen. New Federal Drug Administ...

To the Editor We congratulate Last et al for their valuable contribution to our understanding of the risk of contralateral nodal spread in patients with human papillomavirus (HPV) –associated squamous cell carcinoma of the base of the tongue. They report occult contralateral nodal involvement in 21.4% of the cohort and appropriately argue that this warrants bilateral neck management in patients with this disease. We have 2 questions that would be relevant to the head and ne ck oncology community.
