Abstract Despite decades of formidable exploration, multi-organ ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) encountered, particularly amongst elderly patients with clinical scenarios, such as age-related arteriosclerotic vascular disease, heart surgery and organ transplantation, is still an unsettled conundrum that besets clinicians. Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC), delivered via transient, repetitive noninvasive IR interventions to distant organs or tissues, is regarded as an innovative approach against IRI. Based on the available evidence, RIC holds the potential of affording protection to multiple organs or tissues, w...

We report that the disruption of excitation-contraction coupling contributes to impaired force generation in the mouse model of Sod1 deficiency. Briefly, we found a significant reduction in sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase (SERCA) activity as well as reduced expression of proteins involved in calcium release and force generation. Another potential factor involved in EC uncoupling in Sod1-/- mice is oxidative damage to proteins involved in the contractile response. In summary, this study provides strong support for the coupling between increased oxidative stress and disruption of cellular excitation contraction mac...

Abstract BACKGROUND Donor hypernatremia has been associated with reduced graft and recipient survival after heart, liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation. However, it is unknown what effect donor hypernatremia has on graft and recipient outcomes after lung transplantation. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation of donor hypernatremia with the duration of postoperative mechanical ventilation, the incidence of severe primary graft dysfunction, and survival following lung transplantation. MATERIAL AND METHODS We analyzed all consecutive lung transplantations performed in adult patients at our cent...

ConclusionOur series confirmed that CCPRCC has an indolent clinical behavior. When the diagnosis is made in a high-grade renal tumor, it should be carefully re-confirmed using cytogenetic or genomic methods.

We presently forget 98% of everything we experience. That will go away in favor of perfect, controllable, configurable memory. Skills and knowledge will become commodities that can be purchased and installed. We will be able to feel exactly as we wish to feel at any given time. How we perceive the world will be mutable and subject to choice. How we think, the very fundamental basis of the mind, will also be mutable and subject to choice. We will merge with our machines, as Kurzweil puts it. The boundary between mind and computing device, between the individual and his or her tools, will blur. Over the course of the ...
