Propagating wave activity in a tangential cortical slice

Propagating neural waves in the cerebral cortex influence the integration of incoming sensory information with ongoing cortical activity. However, the neural circuit elements that support these cortical waves remain to be fully defined. Here, a novel tangential slice preparation was developed that exhibited propagating wave activity across the dorsal cortical sheet, as assessed using autofluorescence imaging following focal electrical stimulation. Analysis of functional connectivity in the slice preparation with laser-scanning photostimulation via glutamate uncaging revealed a lack of short-latency, presumed monosynaptic, long-range connections (>300 μm) in the slice preparation. These results establish a novel slice preparation for assessing cortical dynamics and support the proposition that interactions among local cortical elements are sufficient to enable widespread propagating wave activity.

A Batavia hospital has submitted plans for a $7.8 million expansion, a re-do on a plan first announced two years ago. The United Memorial Medical Center project includes a 5,000-square-foot imaging department addition to house a new MRI, CT scanner, and additional X-Ray room plus a new morgue. It’s the first phase of a three-phase plan at the 131-bed hospital, which was initially submitted to the state Depart ment of Health this week in an $18 million proposal that went on to receive approvals…

CONCLUSIONS: In Romanian population, the MMC of mandibular first molars, when present, is commonly associated with a second distal canal, unlike the mandibular second molars where the occurrence of a MMC was associated with only one distal canal. When performing the preoperative evaluation, it has also to be considered the patient gender, since the male∕female ratio of MMC was 1:3 in mandibular first molars and 5:1 in mandibular second molars. CONCLUSION: The septal swell body is a dynamic structure that varies in width over time in close correlation to the inferior turbinates. Further research is required to quantify its relevance as a surgical area of interest. PMID: 32241312 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSION: There is a good correlation between the clinical symptoms and lateralisation of hydropic changes on magnetic resonance imaging. Further refinements of imaging techniques and grading system will likely improve the diagnostic accuracy and clinical utilisation of hydrops magnetic resonance imaging. ConclusionOur study estimated the number of stroke patients undergoing CTA for suspected LVO and those eligible for thrombectomy in relation to the population. Numbers were essentially the same throughout the week, and during office and on-call hours. Our data can be used to make adequate staffing plans.

ConclusionThese results allowed us to conclude the validity of this procedure, since the average RMS difference was below 2  mm and the average percentage of points within ± 2 mm was high. The proposed technique will allow surgeons to provide their patients with more accurate reconstruction procedures which can potentially improve surgical outcomes.

AbstractPrevious work by our group has shown the pro ‐differentiating effects of apotransferrin (aTf) on oligodendroglial cellsin vivo andin vitro. Further studies showed the remyelinating effect of aTf in animal demyelination models such as hypoxia/ischemia, where the intranasal administration of human aTf provided brain neuroprotection and reduced white matter damage, neuronal loss and astrogliosis in different brain regions. These data led us to search for a less invasive and controlled technique to deliver aTf to the CNS. To such end, we isolated extracellular vesicles (EVs) from human and mouse plasma and different n...
