Interdisciplinary consensus of virtual monochromatic dual-energy CT images: is there discrepancy in preferred photon energy between surgeons and radiologists for the assessment of non-unions?

To investigate possible differences between surgeons and radiologists in selecting optimal photon energy settings from a set of virtual monochromatic dual-energy computed tomography (CT) images for the assessment of bone union in patients with a suspected non-union of the appendicular skeleton.

This report describes 2 cases of primary renal carcinoid tumor with unique presentations and management in our regional health care system. Because primary renal carcinoid tumors are quite uncommon, there are no clear established guidelines on preoperative imaging or posttreatment surveillance in patients with these tumors. There remains a large amount of variability in the diagnosis, workup, immunohistochemical analysis, treatment, and surveillance of patients with primary renal carcinoid tumors. As we learn more about this disease, we hope to optimize patient outcomes and standardize pretreatment workup and posttreatment...

CONCLUSION: This case represents the first reported isolated pituitary fossa metastasis from a tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma. A high degree of clinical suspicion is recommended, along with a low threshold for biopsy and a cautioned use of positron emission tomography/computed tomography, when investigating such patients. CONCLUSION: A trained convolutional neural network algorithm appears to successfully identify pneumatisation of the middle turbinate with high accuracy. Further studies can be pursued to test its ability in other clinically important anatomical variants in otolaryngology and rhinology. PMID: 32234081 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Sato S, Imachi H, Kobayashi T, Fukunaga K, Lyu J, Dong T, Yoshioka Y, Saheki T, Fukata Y, Natsuki B, Kurumi U, Kadota K, Murao K Abstract A 50-year-old man was referred to our department for overt Cushing's syndrome (CS). His plasma cortisol concentrations were 314 μg/L, and his urinary cortisol concentrations were 431 μg/day. The plasma ACTH concentration was below the detectable limit. Computed tomography revealed atrophy of both adrenal glands and the presence of a left pararenal tumor. 131I-6β-iodomethyl-norcholesterol scintigraphy showed an intense uptake by the left pararenal tumor. These ...

This study was undertaken in order to validate the accuracy of the TR protocol for dynamically guided implant surgery. A retrospective, observational, in vivo study was performed using dynamic navigation via the TR protocol. The preoperative cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) plan was superimposed and registered (aligned) with the postoperative CBCT scan to assess accuracy parameters. A total of 136 implants were placed in 59 partially edentulous arches. Mean deviation between the planned and actual position for all implants was 0.67 mm at the coronal level (entry point), 0.9 mm at the apical level, and 0.55 mm in depth,...

Authors: Östman PO, Chu SJ, Drago C, Saito H, Nevins M Abstract Extraction and immediate implant placement/restoration in the esthetic zone is clinically challenging; benefits include fewer surgical appointments and maintenance of peri-implant soft tissues throughout the treatment period, and limitations include gingival recession and bone dehiscence during surgery. Macro-hybrid implants (large-diameter apical/narrow-diameter occlusal) were placed in 19 patients immediately following the extraction of hopeless maxillary anterior teeth. Immediate restorations were fabricated without occlusal contacts. Pre- and ...
