AbstractKey contentThe number of women attending gynaecological services who are taking oral anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents is increasing.Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are becoming increasingly popular and offer an alternative to warfarin.Knowledge of the use of anticoagulants in the perioperative period is imperative to provide optimal care and ensure patient safety.It is essential that health professionals practising gynaecology, at all levels, keep up to date to reduce unnecessary cancellations, delays in treatment and increased risks of thrombosis and bleeding.Learning objectivesTo understand the management of women on oral anticoagulant and antiplatelet agents undergoing elective and emergency gynaecological procedures.To appreciate the importance of assessing patient ‐related and procedural‐related risks of thrombosis and bleeding.To review commonly used anticoagulant and antiplatelet agents.
